Mengham
The island's everyday shopping and residential centre, with Mengham Road shops, bungalow-lined streets, and a strong community feel.
Mengham is the main residential and shopping area of Hayling Island, located inland from the seafront in the south-central part of the island. Mengham Road is the principal shopping street, with a parade of shops including a Co-op supermarket, bakery, chemist, newsagent, estate agents, and several takeaways and small restaurants. The shopping offer is practical rather than aspirational, serving the everyday needs of islanders who do not want to cross the bridge to Havant for every purchase. The residential streets around Mengham are a mix of inter-war and post-war housing, with bungalows particularly prominent. Many of the bungalows were built in the 1930s to 1960s as retirement and holiday homes, and this housing stock gives the area its characteristic low-rise appearance. Mengham is where daily life happens on the island, the place where people do their shopping, collect prescriptions, and meet neighbours. The area has a community feel, with the local shops and services providing the glue that holds the neighbourhood together. St Andrew's Church on Church Road serves the Mengham area and is an active parish church.
