South Hayling
The island's seaside centre with a long sandy beach, seafront amusements, the main shopping area, and a relaxed traditional resort character.
South Hayling is the commercial and recreational centre of Hayling Island, stretching along the southern coast from Eastoke in the east to West Town in the west. The seafront is the main attraction, with a long sandy and shingle beach that faces the English Channel and draws visitors throughout the summer months. Beachlands amusement park, the funfair, and the cluster of cafes and takeaways along the Sea Front road give this area the feel of a traditional English seaside resort, though on a quieter scale than places like Southsea or Bognor. The area includes the main shopping parade along Mengham Road and the surrounding streets, where a mix of independent shops, convenience stores, and takeaways serve the local population. The former Butlins holiday camp site, which closed in 2009, occupied a large area near the seafront and has since been partly redeveloped. South Hayling is where most of the island's visitor economy is concentrated, and the seafront car parks fill quickly on summer weekends. The character is relaxed and unpretentious, a place where families have been coming for generations to enjoy the beach, the sea air, and the simple pleasures of a day by the coast.
