Beaches on Hayling Island

Sand, shingle and the seafront

Hayling Island's beaches stretch along the southern shore, facing the Solent and the Isle of Wight. The main beaches are West Beach and Eastoke Beach, connected by the seafront promenade. The beach character varies from sandy stretches to shingle banks, and the conditions change with the tides and the seasons.

West Beach is the more popular beach for families and visitors, with easier access, nearby parking and proximity to the beachfront cafes and shops. The beach is sandy at low tide, with the shingle bank further up the shore. Swimming, paddling, sandcastle building and beach games are the main activities during the summer months.

Eastoke Beach faces the open Solent and is more exposed to wind and waves. The beach here is predominantly shingle, and coastal erosion has been a long-standing concern. The Eastoke sea defences have been reinforced in recent years to protect the residential properties behind the beach. Despite its more rugged character, Eastoke attracts walkers, anglers and those who prefer a quieter stretch of coast.

Beach huts line sections of the seafront and are highly sought after. Ownership of a Hayling beach hut is a prized local asset, and they change hands at prices that reflect their desirability. The huts provide shelter from the wind, storage for beach equipment and a base for day-long seaside visits.

Dog walkers use the beaches extensively, particularly outside the summer season when restrictions are lifted. The beaches are part of daily life for many island residents, who walk along the shore throughout the year regardless of the weather.
