Recycling and Waste on Hayling Island

Bin collections, recycling and waste disposal

Waste collection on Hayling Island follows the standard Havant Borough Council service, with fortnightly collections of general waste, recycling and food waste. Garden waste is collected through a subscription service. The system is the same as on the mainland, though the bridge crossing adds complexity to the collection logistics.

The recycling bin accepts paper, cardboard, plastics, glass and metal cans. The council provides guidance on what can and cannot be recycled, and contamination of recycling bins remains an issue. Common mistakes include putting plastic bags, polystyrene and food-contaminated packaging into the recycling.

The nearest household waste recycling centre is on the mainland in Havant, and residents who need to dispose of larger items must cross the bridge to reach it. This is an inconvenience that mainland residents do not face, and it occasionally leads to fly-tipping on the island's quiet lanes and open spaces.

Beach litter is an additional concern on Hayling, particularly during the summer when visitor numbers increase. Community beach cleans, organised by volunteers and supported by environmental organisations, help to keep the beaches tidy. The Marine Conservation Society's annual beach clean events are supported by Hayling residents.

The environmental consciousness of the island community is growing, with more residents composting at home, reducing single-use plastics and supporting local schemes to minimise waste.
