Restaurants on Hayling Island
Where to eat out on the island
Dining out on Hayling Island is a modest affair compared to the restaurant scenes of Portsmouth or Chichester, but the island has a handful of restaurants and pub dining rooms that serve the local community and visiting holidaymakers. The concentration of eateries is mainly along Mengham Road and in South Hayling, with a few options scattered across the island.
The pubs that serve food are the backbone of the island dining scene. Several offer traditional British menus with Sunday roasts, fish and chips, pies and grills. During the summer months, the beachside venues come into their own, offering fish and seafood with views across the Solent. The seasonal nature of much of the island's hospitality means that some restaurants reduce their hours or close entirely during the quieter winter months.
Indian, Chinese and Italian restaurants provide alternatives to British pub food, and several have been established on the island for many years. Fish and chips remains the quintessential Hayling meal, particularly for visitors who associate the seaside with battered cod and mushy peas.
The restaurant scene on Hayling is constrained by the island's small permanent population and the seasonal flow of visitors. Restaurants that survive tend to be those that have built a loyal local following and can ride out the quiet months between October and April. For special occasions or more adventurous dining, most residents cross the bridge to Havant, Emsworth or Portsmouth.
