Hayling Island Railway Opens
1867
The Hayling Island branch line opened on 17 July 1867, connecting the island to the main railway network at Havant. The single-track line crossed Langstone Harbour on a timber bridge and ran south through the island to a terminus near the seafront. The railway transformed Hayling from an isolated agricultural island into an accessible seaside destination. Holidaymakers from London, Portsmouth, and beyond could now reach the island's beaches by train, and the line stimulated the development of South Hayling as a resort. The railway served the island for nearly a century, carrying passengers, goods, and the raw materials that sustained island life. The distinctive Terrier class tank engines that worked the line became synonymous with the Hayling railway.
