Suppression of Hayling Priory
1414
Hayling Priory was suppressed in 1414 by Henry V as part of the seizure of alien priories, religious houses that owed allegiance to monasteries in France. The priory's connection to the Abbey of Jumieges made it a target, and its lands and revenues were confiscated by the Crown. The dissolution of the priory ended three centuries of monastic presence on the island and transferred the management of the island's agricultural land to secular hands. The priory buildings fell into disuse and decay, and the site was eventually absorbed into the farming landscape. St Mary's Church, which had served both the priory and the parish, continued in use and remains the oldest surviving building on the island.
