Bus Services on Hayling Island

Public transport to and from the island

Bus services connect Hayling Island to Havant and the wider public transport network. The main bus route runs from South Hayling, through the island and across the bridge to Havant town centre and railway station. The service is provided by Stagecoach and operates at regular intervals during the day, with reduced frequencies in the evening and on Sundays.

For residents without cars, the bus is the primary means of reaching the mainland for shopping, healthcare, employment and connections to the rail network. The journey from South Hayling to Havant takes approximately twenty to thirty minutes, depending on traffic and the number of stops. The bus route covers the main residential areas, with stops along Havant Road, Mengham Road and the other main routes.

The frequency of the bus service is adequate for most routine journeys during the day, but the reduced evening and weekend service limits its usefulness for social outings and shift workers. The last bus from Havant to Hayling runs relatively early, and residents who miss it face the choice of a taxi or an overnight stay on the mainland.

School services supplement the regular bus route during term time, carrying students to and from secondary schools on the mainland. The school buses can be crowded, and parents of younger secondary school children sometimes drive their children to school rather than relying on the bus.

The absence of a railway station on or near Hayling (the nearest being Havant) means that the bus service is the only public transport link. Integration between the bus and rail timetables at Havant is imperfect but workable for most journeys.
