Cycling on Hayling Island
Routes, trails and two-wheeled island life
Cycling on Hayling Island benefits from the flat terrain, the quiet residential roads and the traffic-free Hayling Billy Trail. The island's compact size means that most destinations are reachable by bicycle within fifteen to twenty minutes, making cycling a practical alternative to driving for everyday journeys.
The Hayling Billy Trail is the island's premier cycling route, providing a smooth, traffic-free path from the bridge area to South Hayling. The trail is used by commuters cycling to the bridge for onward journeys to Havant, by families on recreational rides and by visitors exploring the island without a car.
The seafront promenade is another popular cycling route, though it is shared with pedestrians and can be busy during summer weekends. The residential roads on the island carry relatively light traffic, and cycling between the shops, schools and beaches is straightforward.
Bicycle hire is available on the island during the summer season, and several of the holiday parks provide bikes for their guests. For visiting cyclists, the island offers a pleasant, low-effort ride through a landscape of beaches, harbours and flat farmland.
The connection from Hayling to the mainland cycle network involves crossing the bridge, which is less pleasant for cyclists due to the traffic volume. However, once across, the cycle routes towards Havant and beyond provide links to the wider Hampshire cycling network.
