Closure of the Hayling Island Railway
1963
The Hayling Island branch line closed on 4 November 1963, a casualty of the Beeching cuts that reshaped Britain's railway network. The timber bridge across Langstone Harbour was in poor condition and would have required expensive replacement, and the line's passenger numbers had declined as car ownership increased. The closure severed the island's rail link to the mainland and left the A3023 road bridge as the sole connection. The loss of the railway was felt keenly by islanders, who had relied on the line for nearly a century. The former railway route was subsequently converted into the Hayling Billy Trail, a walking and cycling path that runs the length of the island and has become one of its most popular recreational features.
