Hayling Billy Trail Opens
1984
The Hayling Billy Trail was established in the 1980s on the route of the former Hayling Island railway line, which had closed in 1963. The trail runs from the bridge at Langstone southward through the island, providing a flat, traffic-free route for walkers and cyclists. The name Billy Trail refers to the nickname given to the railway, reportedly after a goat that lived near the line. The trail has become one of the most popular recreational features on the island, used by families, dog walkers, commuting cyclists, and visitors exploring the island. The conversion of the old railway into a public path preserved the route and gave the island a green corridor that connects the bridge to the southern coast.
