Eastoke Coastal Defence Works
1985
Major coastal defence works were undertaken at Eastoke in the 1980s to protect the vulnerable south-eastern corner of Hayling Island from flooding and erosion. The low-lying Eastoke area had suffered repeated flooding, and the sea defences were inadequate to cope with storm surges and rising sea levels. Rock armour, beach replenishment, and improved drainage were among the measures implemented. Further phases of work followed in subsequent decades as the threat from coastal flooding continued to grow. The Eastoke defences represent a significant public investment in protecting the island's most vulnerable community, and the ongoing need for maintenance and improvement is a recurring issue in local politics and planning.
