Salterns Lane
Street guide, Hayling Island
Salterns Lane runs through the southern part of the island, its name recalling the salt production that was once an important industry on Hayling. Medieval salt pans operated along the island's shores, exploiting the tidal marshes to evaporate seawater and produce salt for preservation and trade. The lane today is residential, with bungalows and houses lining its length. The character is quiet and suburban, typical of the mid-twentieth-century development that covers much of the island's southern half. Salterns Lane connects to the surrounding residential streets and is within reach of both the seafront and the Mengham Road shops. The name is one of several on the island that preserves the memory of the medieval salt trade.
